Danish embassy in Beruit burned
Another day, another attack on a Danish embassy in the Middle East. Today protesters in Beirut numbering in the tens of thousands rampaged through the Christian part of the city, where the embassy was located. The building was set aflame and powerful explosions could be heard. Firemen who attempted to put out the blaze were attacked, as were their vehicles. Fears that the violence could spiral into sectarian warfare between Muslims and Christians within Beirut are high -- the Danish flag's Nordic cross taking on a new, polarizing meaning rather unrepresentative of the secular society it represents.

Meanwhile demonstrations for reconciliation took place in the Kongens Nygorv square in the Danish capitol. Author and journalist Carsten Jensen addressed the crowd, saying "... I don't want to live in a country which only apologizes to the powerful, while acting deaf when they weak speak out." Stand-up comic Omar "Half-Egyptian, All Comic" Marzouk wondered aloud if the calls for a Muslim boycott of Denmark meant that "...I would have to boycott myself? But then I realized i could boycott my Danish wife. She hasn't got any action for the last two weeks!" His words caused perhaps the only collective laughter about the events of the past two weeks amongst the gathered crowd.
